Once the new year hits, I like to replenish my fitness gear and weed out the ones that are old, worn and don’t fit well. I find that finding the right fitness gear takes time and a little bit of patience — there’s so much to try on and sizing is different from your everyday jeans. I’ve had purchases in the past that were all wrong and had to live with them because I rushed or didn’t want to try on more than one size. The thing about workoutwear now is that you will find people wearing it all day long, from the studio to out to dinner, so buying pieces that function both at the gym and on the street are good choices.
Since most people are still in fitness resolution mode, I thought it was only fitting to ask Kathleen Gantz, owner of Cardioglow in Barrington, Rhode Island, to share her top workoutwear picks, trends and how to get the best fit. Cardioglow carries some of my favorite fitness gear, aka athleisure, which are comfortable, wearable and stylish. See below on the gear to pick up in the new year:
What are some fashion trends you are seeing right now?
Most of what is trending has a very strong urban slant. City colors such as black and shades of grey have been updated with splashes of white and touches of the color green (kale and emerald) and pink in blush tones to make them more modern. City styling details are strong and in all categories from bras, tops, jackets and leggings including sheer panels, mesh details and motorcycle styling.
What’s important to keep in mind on fit and comfort when shopping for fitness gear?
First, always try on two sizes. The smaller one that you can get on is the one to get. We have a tendency to try on one of something and assume that it fits. All of these items have stretch so fit can be deceiving. Make sure you do some of the movements in the fitting room, that you will do when wearing them to ensure they don’t move too much. Second, only purchase bottoms with the proper rise for your body. If a waistband is too low, it’s only going to feel and fall lower with exercise. The same is true for a high-rise waist. It may creep up with movement. Make sure it feels comfortable, natural and almost invisible.
What are some key items that will update your look this time of year?
A sexy sports bra — one with sheer panels, mesh details or lots of straps — a modern printed or sheer paneled legging and a great overlay such as a versatile jacket, sweater, sweatshirt or a t-shirt that makes the look appear less like it belongs in the gym and more like it’s intended for the street. Lastly, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone stylistically and try something new. You will feel great and more current, sexy and fashionable.
You carry some great athleisure pieces at your studio. What are some items you are excited about?
We search high and low to find just the right pieces that make a workout wardrobe go from standard to incredible. We’re proud of our overlayers, which are more unique than a typical zip up jacket and go over workoutwear. We carry a full line of gear that you can wear from the studio to anywhere — jackets that can be worn not just to the gym but to a meeting or dinner; sweatshirts that have the look of sweaters; tops that are comfortable for fitness, but can stand alone with jeans.
Some of the workoutwear I’m currently loving:
Stylish pants in a fun pattern and with a pop of blush tones.
A mesh cut-out bra that is both supportive and stylish.
The perfect sweatshirt to go from the gym to cocktails with friends.
Black and white sneakers.
The dress up T-shirt.
A comfortable, breathable tank with pretty details.
