I tend to be picky about hair styling products as some can make my fine, straight hair flat and greasy. These days, I’m slightly obsessed with texturizing sprays, which add just the right amount of volume, texture and absorb any oil at the roots. You can pretty much rock any style with these sprays—updo, beachy waves, ponytail—and are great for all hair types. I like to use them after a blowdry to add the right amount of oomph as well as throughout the day to refresh and give more of that effortless look.
“Texture sprays add “grit” to the hair without any powdery residue for easier styling and better results,” says Jason J. Dougherty, stylist at New York’s City’s Butterfly Studio. “The key is to take small sections and apply at the root, holding the hair section up. This gives volume and fullness and absorbs oil on the scalp for results that last.”
If you want a more tousled beachy look, Dougherty suggests tilting your head to one side, spray with the bottle down low and direct it up into the ends. “Then softly scrunch and repeat on the other side. Shake it out to break it up and you’re ready to go.”
If you have not tried any of these stylers, here are some of my faves to rock that undone, cool girl look:
Shu Uemura Art of Hair Texture Wave ($38) – This is not heavy or sticky and leaves a nice amount of texture and volume, while keeping hair soft.
Kerastase V.I.P Volume in Powder ($20) – Great for updos, ponytails or any style with a backcomb effect with no residue and loads of volume.
Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($42)– My absolute favorite spray. I love the smell, the way it protects hair color and how it gives the right amount of grit while zapping oil.
Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Perfect Texture ($28)– This adds fullness and texture with a nice matte finish.
