As much as I love trendy makeup looks, I’m pretty much a makeup minimalist and go with a low maintenance look —a little base, concealer, mascara and blush and bronzer are the usual daily suspects. However, I always love the look of a red lip. It’s classic, sophisticated and timeless and something about a red lip in the winter is so pretty and fresh. Plus, it really wakes up your face. I tested a bunch of red lipsticks — matte, sheer, creamy — for someone like me who usually keeps their makeup palette pretty simple and neutral. When I’m feeling a little more daring, I like to wear a red lip for a night out and would wear one for an important meeting during the day, always paired with fresh-faced skin and dark, fluttery lashes.
If you think red lipstick is intimidating, I get it. It took me years to finally find one that suits me and there are way better options from years ago. Here are my picks on the best reds that look great on anyone:
1. Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in Gladiolus — I love this drugstore red for its creamy consistency and color that is not too orangey or red. It brightens up my drab complexion instantly and I like how it’s not too matte or glossy. Plus, I hear Emma Stone is a big fan of this color and if she wears it then it’s worth a try.
2. MAC Ruby Woo — I’ve seen this color on blondes and brunettes and it works well for everyone. I love how this is a classic blue-based red with a matte consistency for a sophisticated statement. Since it’s so highly pigmented, I like to dab it on slowly till I get the desired color and finish with a lip brush to smooth out the edges.
3. Dior Rouge Lipstick in Red Smile — The perfect bright red with coral undertones in a creamy formula that feels great on lips and really wakes up a drab complexion. I love this color to wear year round and it works well on pale to medium skin tones.
4. Sephora Rouge Balm SPF 20 in Soft Red — For those who want a sheer wash of red, this moisturizing balm is for you. It’s like a lightened up version of Ruby Woo, but with a nice sheen to it and SPF to boot. Plus, it’s a great one to pull off during the daytime.
