Summer is not over yet. It is flying by (as it always does), but there’s still time left and I plan on soaking up every minute of the next few weeks into Labor Day, enjoying the beach, pool and being outside as much as possible. SPF is part of my daily routine year round, but now that I’m outside more, I’ve been applying it constantly throughout the day. I prefer non-irritating formulas that are fluid, contain some type of antioxidant, won’t clog pores, provide both UVA and UVB protection and won’t leave a white chalky residue. I’ve been testing a bunch of face sunscreens over the last few weeks — both mineral and physical — and some of my favorites are below. They are all for everyday wear and work year round, so there is no excuse to ever skip SPF again:
Best Sport Sunscreen: Coola Classic Face Sport White Tea SPF 50
Chock full of antioxidants such as omega 3, 6 and 9 and nourishing organic evening primrose oil and linseed oil to help reduce redness, this lightweight sunscreen feels great on the skin and is never irritating. It’s been my go-to facial sunscreen for the whole family this summer and is always in my beach bag. I’ve even done some sweaty outside workout sessions with it on and it never made me break out.
Best Clear: Cover FX Clear Cover Invisible Sunscreen SPF 30
For those that hate wearing sunscreen, this gel-like broad spectrum SPF goes on clear and smooth, containing squalene and sesame extract to keep skin hydrated and tomato extract to protect against free radicals. I like how it feels under makeup, but it’s also great alone.
Best for Dry Skin: L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Hydra Nutrition Facial Oil
This facial oil contains broad spectrum SPF 30 and eight essential oils for both moisture and sun protection. Ideal for dry, mature skin, you only need a few drops to cover the face and chest and it won’t leave a greasy residue.
Sensitive and Acne Prone Skin: EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46
A dermatologist recommended this gentle, effective facial SPF a few years ago and I’ve been a HUGE fan since. Oil-free, paraben free and fragrance free, this daily reliable SPF never leaves a white residue, hydrates without being oily, contains niacinimide (vitamin B3) and feels great on skin.
Best for Dull Skin: Dr. Dennis Gross Instant Radiance Sun Defense SPF 40
This lightweight physical broad-spectrum daily SPF adds a touch of radiance and color to skin that feels drab and dull. Color-correctors help conceal redness and uneven tone, leaving skin with a smooth, radiant complexion.
Best Brightening: Equitance Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 36
Lightweight and fast-drying, this fluid SPF can be worn daily — rain or shine. It won’t clog pores, contains light diffusers, brightens dark spots with linoleic acid and hydrates skin with Japanese tree extracts.
Best Compact: AmorePacific Sun Protection Cushion SPF 30+
A cushion compact packed with SPF 30 is genius, especially making it easy to reapply on the go. The formula is silky and lightweight, containing plum extract and purslane to help protect skin from environmental aggressors while bamboo sap keeps skin moisturized.
Best Mattifying: La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Daily Tone Correcting Primer
Both UVA and UVB filters are in this matte tinted primer that helps conceal redness, minimize pores and smooth fine lines. I like to apply it to my T-Zone and to some discoloration above my lips for added protection without any greasy feel.
Most Portable: Colorescience Sunforgetteable Broad Spectrum SPF 30
I got hooked on this sheer powder mineral sunscreen years ago while I was out in the Hamptons. It’s featherweight, goes on dry and the easy-to-use brush on applicator is perfect for travel. Plus, it’s great for kids who refuse to wear SPF and can be used on the scalp to prevent sunburn.
