Bronzer is the ultimate summer makeup staple, and while I wear a glow enhancer year round to prevent me from looking ghostly in the winter months, I amp it up this time of year and add one with a bit more shimmer or a warmer golden hue for that J.Lo glow. Two of my favorites — NARS Laguna and Guerlain Terracotta — have been my go-to bronzers for years, and they work year-round for the perfect natural sun-kissed look. But, I’m loving some new powders and liquid formulas out there that add nice definition, smooth the complexion and give me that just back from the beach look without looking streaky or orange.
The key to applying bronzer is to use soft, light strokes. I like to make a number 3 starting at the hairline then to my cheekbones and finishing at my jaw line, but some days I apply it anywhere the sun would typically hit the face —the forehead, bridge of my nose, jawline and cheeks. Always start out light — you can always add more — and make sure to blend well and apply to your neck for a seamless look.
Here are seven bronzers (both old and new) for the prettiest sun-kissed glow:
HONEST Beauty Luminizing Powder in Dusk Reflection: This baked face powder gives a nice luminous finish and really could work for all skin tones, enhancing features or just adding color where you need it. It has the most shimmer out of the group of bronzers mentioned below, but it goes on subtle and gives a warm beachy look. It even works well on the eyelids and décolleté for a sexy glow.
Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder in Blondes: One of my favorite bronzers of all time. This gives the right amount of warmth to my face without looking orangey, and is moisturizing without being heavy. It blends seamlessly and works well with both powder and cream blush. It also lasts forever, and comes in a range of colors for all skin tones. In the winter, I’ll use a lighter hue (blondes 00) for a more subtle look.
Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer in Light Bronzer: This smells like a yummy piña colada, and the compact comes with a brush and mirror for easy application on the go. I’ve never had much luck with a drugstore bronzer, but this one is really nice and gives a soft golden color that you can layer. It’s infused with nut butters from the Amazon such as Murmur, Cupuacu and Tucuma, which makes the bronzer go on creamy and smooth. The light bronzer color works well on fair skin tones.
Fiona Stiles Bronzing Sun Veil in Ahiko: I started using this matte bronzer in the spring when my skin needed a little pick me up and it gave a nice hint of color without being too overpowering. I like how you can build the formula and even use it for contouring. It works great on lighter skin tones.
Sephora Cushion Bronzer in Natural Finish: I’m not a big fan or liquid bronzers, but this natural-looking formula is in a cushion compact, which is ideal for traveling or tossing in your bag to add some color and depth throughout the day. It comes with a pad for application, but I like to apply with a stiff brush for a flawless burnished glow.
NARS Laguna Bronzing Powder: I’ve been using this bronzer on and off for years and it gives that golden, beachy look without trying too much. It’s a brownish gold hue that works well on fair to medium skin tones has the prettiest natural looking color that is never orange or flat.
Urban Decay Beached Bronzer in Bronzed: I love the way this matte toasty-colored bronzer feels on my skin. There’s no streaking, no shimmer and it gives a sexy bombshell look without looking fake. It comes in two colors: sun-kissed and bronzed ( I’ve been wearing the bronzed) and gives really nice coverage.
