Hyaluronic serums have been around for a while, but a batch of new ones are cropping up in derms offices and at beauty counters that have better formulas and more moisturizing benefits to help promote healthy looking skin. I like these serums especially this time of year when my skin is transitioning into cooler weather and when I want to keep my beauty regimen simple. You only need one or two drops and they instantly hydrate without any stickiness or greasiness—you can even double up with your daily moisturizer if you want more of a moisture boost.
So what’s so great about this skincare ingredient that you pretty much see everywhere? Well, hyaluronic acid retains 1,000 times its own volume in water so it’s an instant plumper and will help blur fine lines and wrinkles. It also works as a great hydrator for those with acne or sensitive skin. “Used regularly these serums can help improve the appearance of fine lines by temporarily plumping the external layer of the skin, but are too large to penetrate into the deeper layers,” says NY-based dermatologist Dr. Sandra Kopp.
Sonia Deasy, founder of Pestle & Mortar Cosmetics, a relatively new skincare brand from Ireland that features one (and only) product called Pure Hyaluronic Serum, says, “hyaluronic acid is important to incorporate into a daily skincare routine because while it is naturally present in your body, it starts to rapidly diminish after the age of 30.”
Kopp suggests applying these serums onto damp skin to lock in the external moisture so water isn’t drawn out of the deeper layers. I tend to use these serums mostly in the morning after cleansing, but they work well in the evening to prep and plump skin before a night out.
Here are three hyaluronic serums that are super-hydrating and give glowing results:
This serum contains a hyaluronic base infused with botanical extracts—green tea, ginkgo biloba, fenugreek and lime blossom—as well as vitamin E to hydrate and soften skin without clogging pores. I like how this soaks into the skin instantly without any greasiness.
Two drops of this gel-like serum, which contains 80 percent hyaluronic acid as well as aloe and vitamin E with a touch of lactic acid for some mild exfoliating, leaves skin glowy and supple. According to the company, skin will be more radiant after three days of usage.
Multiple molecular forms of hyaluronic acid (so scientific) make up this serum so it easily penetrates the skin for deeper hydration. The blue color is from a mineral complex containing zinc and copper PCA, which help moisturize and reduce excess oil. One drop gives a ton of moisture while leaving skin silky smooth.
