Summer is usually the time that my social calendar heats up (barbecues, beach parties and dinners in the city), and now that I’m leaving NYC, I have a lot more celebrations and parties to go to. I love getting together with friends, but I feel pressure if the celebration is focused around me. What am I going to wear? Do I need to get a blow out or put my hair in a messy bun? Do I go for a bold lip or pink gloss? I definitely overthink the whole going-out thing (it’s just so easy to stay home), but I do have a prep plan that makes me feel good celebrating all the exciting changes in my life this time of year.
I’m not into a full bouncy blowout and usually leave my hair a little more on the messier side, kind of an effortless look. Glossy, healthy hair and adding a subtle wave with a curling iron (this one is the bomb!) is my go-to look. Or if I really want to look as if I just came from the salon, I’ll go to the local blow-dry bar and pick the “beachy” style. Either way, I make sure I bring lots of hair ties because I play with my hair and if it’s hot and sticky my hair usually goes up in a bun or low ponytail.
Since a lot of these parties are outside in the hot, humid weather, I often go with a light, bronzey look and a subtle smokey eye. It’s what I feel more comfortable with and can pull off without thinking about it too much. I love shadows from Make Up For Ever and pick neutrals with a bronzey color. A primer after moisturizer (I like this one now) that will help keep makeup in place and combat shine is a must. I also make sure to blend foundation with this brush for a smooth natural look. Then I play around with bronzers, contouring and add a punchy blush on my cheeks with mascara and gloss.
Seriously, I feel all you need for summer are lush brows and you can get away with little makeup and wear a t-shirt and look smoking hot! I make sure to see a brow professional before I have a lot of parties so the shape is good and then I can fill them in with brow pencil to make them look lush and sexy. I also love brushing them up and just adding a brow gel for a natural look.
Outside parties call for good skin and before it starts to climb to the 90-degree temps, I like to get a really good facial to clean out my pores and get my skin in shape for upcoming festivities. I also believe in using a product with acids (lactic and glycolic) two nights a week and exfoliate my body and face so it’s smooth and glowy. A body oil such as this one after a shower or this bronzey one gives legs a beachy glow.
I tend to get manicures unless I am out spending time at the beach and then I just keep nails bare and short. Chipped nails are my pet peeve and especially not pretty when you have a party. When I don’t have time for a mani, a sheer polish like this always makes bare nails look more put together.
