Since the temperatures have dropped, I’ve been battling a chronic case of chapped lips. My lips feel tight and dry throughout the day, and I find myself constantly applying any type of balm or salve to help keep them moist and comfortable.
“Skin on the lips is thinner than other areas of the face and gets easily dehydrated, which can cause chapping,” says Jeannette Graf, a New York dermatologist. “Cooler temperatures, wind and low humidity deplete moisture, and if you lick your lips, the saliva evaporates so it draws moisture away from lip tissues, contributing to chapping.”
Luckily, there is just about every type of balm and salve out there to help bring relief and comfort to chapped lips. “When it comes to selecting a lip balm, it’s a good idea to choose an emollient formula containing shea butter, petrolatum and glycerin rather than a super-waxy stick,” says Graf. “Emollients penetrate better, whereas waxy formulas simple coat the surface of the lips.”
Here are five of my favorite balms and salves that will replenish and protect lips in cooler temps:
Burt’s Bees Lip Balm ($3.30) – I love these affordable moisturizing balms, which come in a variety of flavors including honey, passion fruit and mango butter, and infused with nourishing beeswax, shea butter and sunflower seed oil.
Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Intensive Lip Repair Balm ($23) – This soothes lips in just one application. I apply this thick salve before bed, which is infused with petrolatum, shea and palm tree butters, essential fatty acids, honey, vitamin E and botanical extracts, and wake up with soft, smooth lips.
Nivea A Kiss of Moisture Lip Balm ($2.69)– Shea butter and jojoba oil soothe parched lips and I like how this balm feels and wears under lipstick.
Rodin Lip Balm ($34) – The chic, minimalist lucite packaging of this balm is one of my favorites and the hydrating formula, containing shea butter, beeswax, castor seed oil and jasmine and orange flower oils, seals in moisture without being too waxy or oily. The light pink tint imparts a nice sheen and it has a light floral scent.
Avène Cold Cream Lip Cream ($16) – This rich lip cream is super-moisturizing and is a good option for those with severe dryness. Shea butter, linoleic acid, vitamin E, sucralfate and thermal spring water soften skin and help restore the skin barrier for noticeably smoother lips.
