Friends who are starting to see the signs of aging and are becoming more interested in looking more rested and youthful always ask what anti-aging ingredients they should incorporate into their beauty routine. After interviewing countless dermatologists and going over clinical studies, retinoids are still the gold standard when it comes to turning back the clock as well as helping control acne, treat hyperpigmentation and speed up cell renewal.
Retinoids (Retin-A, Renova, Tazorac) are derived from Vitamin A and work on a molecular level to stimulate new production of collagen, help unclog and minimize pores and improve skin texture. New technology has made retinoids and retinols more tolerable and less irritating. More gentle forms are found over-the-counter, but may take longer to see results, while prescription-strength retinoids (Retin-A, Renova, Tazorac) may take less time, but can be harsh on the skin.
If you’re 40 and over, try incorporating a prescription-strength retinoid into your skincare routine to help with wrinkles, texture and tone. If you are in your 30s and already seeing the signs of aging, you can try an over-the-counter retinol product. First-timers should always go slow and apply a small dime-size amount to the face every two to three days in the evening. Once your skin can handle it, start applying it every night.
Keep in mind, when using a retinoid or OTC retinol:
— Don’t use a retinoid a few days you plan on getting facial hair waxed. Skin will be more sensitive and can risk skin tearing and peeling
— Make sure to wear SPF 30 or higher
— Skip a retinoid if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
